Discussion: Amazing Spider-Man 700 and Avenging Spider-Man 15.1

This article contains major spoilers.  Such as Darth Vader IS Luke Skywalker’s father.  Bruce Willis IS dead at the end of Sixth Sense and the lil alien doesn’t buy it at the end of E.T.:  The Extra-Terrestrial.  So, if you haven’t seen those movies, you’re screwed.  But, if you haven’t read the fore mentioned books, now’s the time to see what’s going on at Fadderly.com (now that’s what we in the biz call a “plug”)

I really don’t know what to make of the going’s on with Amazing #700.  Overall, it was a pretty good story.  Actually, truth be told, I found the last  few issues of Amazing downright entertaining.  So, I guess the problems I have aren’t so much with #700, but with the implications of #700…

One of which being, for all intent and purpose, Peter Parker doesn’t exist at all in any of the Marvel Universes.  Not in the Ultimate Universe (Miles Morales taking over back in 2011) and now in the “regular” 616 universe.

Peter’s not the first to lose his mantle of the mask.  Bruce Wayne was lost/died/not around fairly recently and Dick Grayson took over as Batman (again).  Which, is fine by me.  Besides the fact that I like Dick as Batman, a little shake up of status quo is a good thing now and again.

yea, otto!!! don’t forget to get a squeeze in too!

In the case of Spidey, though, it’s the fact that it’s not someone Peter (or us, for that matter) trusted to take over for him.  I know.  I know.  I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking:  “I can’t believe I’m reading this.  Stuff like this is the reason they shouldn’t let everyone on the internets Peter never even met Miles and he took over as Spider-Man.”  Look, if that’s what you’re thinking, then nuts to you!  Because a) Peter met Miles in the Amazing Spider-men crossover (yeaaaaaaaa! how you like me now?!?!?) and  b) even if that doesn’t count (and it probably doesn’t) at least Miles got the blessing from Nick Fury/Captain America/the Avengers to don the webs.  Doc Ock?  Not so much.

yea, Miles!!! don’t forget to get a squeeze in, too!

Okokokok, Marvel.  I admit, it’s a pretty good premise.  A bad guy vowing to do good.  But, here’s the proverbial stick in my craw.  As Peter was dying in #700, Otto promised to do good.  But, already in Avenging Spider-man 15.1 ( and while I’m at it, what’s with the “.1” issues?  It’s confusing!  Isn’t a “.1” an upgrade to any already existing story (in this case), not a tangent?!?!?) he seems to either of forgetten his promise, or in the very least, is starting to back peddle!?!?  What?  It wasn’t even a single issue!  How about letting Otto struggle a bit more before he starts having these kind of thoughts?!?!?

come on! it’s the first page of the “.1” issue!!! what would Peter do, Otto? What would Peter do?!?!?

Now, look, I’m no fool 1.  I’m sure Peter will be back in the webs soon enough. Probably before the release of the next movie.  So, maybe this is all just a set up.  But, what if one of these times, Marvel actually follows through with this?  Talk about a “What if…”!  What if they decide to leave Peter dead this time, if not for good…then with the intention of him being dead for a really long time?

you made a promise, Otto! you’re already letting all of us down!
