My Top 5 Songs of All Time. Pt 1.

I get asked all the time:  “My friendly neighborhood jman, what are your top 5 favorite songs of all time?”  And by “all the time”, I really mean never.  It’s more something I think about way too much.  So, I decided to finally make a definitive list.  This way, when the paparazzi are hounding me as I’m leaving McDonalds for the 4th time on any given day, I’ll be able to give them a straight answer.

can't you vultures leave a guy to his big mac(s)

To compile this list, I had to have some qualifications.  The song had to be at least a few years old.  New songs don’t really count.  Not that there’s that many decent new songs out these days, but still…they’re new.  New things are exciting.  They’re shiny.  They haven’t been broken in enough.  They haven’t stood the test of time.

Another qualification?  No matter what mood I’m in…happy, sad, flabbergasted…if any of these songs comes on I can be like:  “Yeaaaa!  That’s my jam!”  Word of caution, though.  If any of these songs happen to come on the radio while we’re in the car?  Do me a solid…shut the fuck up til it’s over?  Cause these are my top jams:

5)  It’s a five-way tie for 5th place.  What can I say?  You didn’t really think I was gonna be able to pick only 5 songs, didja?

“Get it on (Bang a gong)” – The Power Station.  Yes.  I prefer the remake over the boring as snot T Rex original. Sue me.  I like this song so much, I use it in my almost internet famous internet show.  Its.  Just.  That.  Awesome.  By rights, it really should just be #5, but then I wouldn’t be able to include all these other songs.  So suffer the indignity of sharing the number 5 spot it does….

“Slide” – The Goo Goo Dolls.  I make no excuses here.  It is what it is. We all have our guilty pleasures.  I’m just the first to admit it painfully putting it out there.  I like this song.  C’mon.  It’s got great lyrics.  “What you feel is what you are.  And what you are is beautiful.”  Look.  I don’t care how cool you think you are.  I don’t care how much of a metalhead you are.  You know you tried saying that shit to your girl to get some action.

Truth be told, Dizzy Up the Girl (which the song is from) is probably in my Top 5 CDs/albums/whateverkidsarecallingthemthesedays of all time.

“Good” – Better Than Ezra.  The year was 1995.  Everyone was wearing flannel, work boots and singing depressing shit about not partying anymore.  “Good” was on the radio at least 5 times and hour.  I have no idea what the song is about.  But, it’s completely singable.

“Well, maybe I’ll call or write you a letter.  Now, maybe we’ll see on the Fourth of July.  But I’m not too sure, and I’m not too proud.  Well, I’m not too sure and I’m not too proud to say.”  What does the Fourth of July have to do with anything?  Who knows.  But, it was good (nice, right?!?!?  Like how I did that?!?!?)

“We Will Rock you/We are the champions” – Queen.  The anthem to end all anthems.  When the big guy upstairs needed an anthem made he sent it down to Freddie and the boys.  My favorite part?  The humming guitar in We Will Rock You.  Brian May’s guitar hums a good couple seconds under Freddie’s singing right before it goes into the solo.  God I love that shit.

That and the clapping. C’mon.

“My Old School” – Steely Dan.  WTF, amiright?!?!?  Fucking Steely Dan?!?!  What’s a Steely Dan anyway?  It’s an “adult toy”.  But, that’s not really neither here nor there.  I told you this was my list.  And a jam was going on this list if I could listen to it no matter what mood I’m in.  And this song?!?  Yup.   It’s good stuff.  It’s got great lyrics and great harmonies (no Michael McDonald on this one, but you know…what you gonna do).  Just shut up and listen to it.  You’ll love it!
